1.4 million People in the United States suffer from Inflammatory bowel disease. Managing Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis can be overwhelming for patients. Your Meijer Specialty Pharmacy Care Team works directly with you and with your doctor’s office to help you access the medication you need, seek out any required insurance approvals, and then investigate financial assistance programs to bring down out-of-pocket costs, if possible.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a broad term used to describe two major autoimmune disorders: Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Both conditions are characterized by chronic (long-lasting) inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract caused by an abnormal immune response. Inflammatory bowel diseases (CD and UC) should not be confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder that affects the colon’s muscle contractions. Intestinal inflammation is not a symptom of IBS, which is a much less serious condition than UC or CD.

CD and UC are very similar in their symptoms, thus 10-15% of patients with IBD cannot be further diagnosed with CD or UC. However, it is very important to accurately diagnose either CD or UC in order to select the appropriate treatment plan and provide a more accurate prognosis. Patients with UC typically have mild symptoms that come and go, with fairly long periods between flare-ups. Furthermore, both CD and UC can also affect the joints, eyes, skin, and liver.
